Cake-n-Bake Game: a Fun Cake Themed Birthday Party with Friends & Family

Disclosure: I received Cake-n-bake Challenge from Tryazon in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own. I may collect a share of sales from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them.

I celebrated my birthday by playing Hey Buddy Hey Pal's Cake-n-bake challenge game. It is so fun to play. I think a great additional to any birthday. Hence, I decided it would be really creative to make my birthday party a cake theme. To surprise my guests, I thought it would be clever to bake a cake and decorate it with the essence of the Cake-n-bake game in mind. Since the playing pieces are shaped like a round layer cake and the frosting is covered in sprinkles, I made a round 2-layer box cake from Dolly Parton's banana cake mix and added milk chocolate ganache filling. It was my first attempt at a ganache, so I am happy that it came out really delicious. Once it cooled, I covered the cake with a Dolly's white butter cream frosting and rainbow sprinkles. I kept the cake out of sight, saving it as a surprise, until we finished playing the Cake-bake game.

The game is really interactive, hands on, and more competitive than I would have expected. The play time can be quick or long depending on how many and who the other contenders are. My mom played the role of show host calling out: ready set bake each time we set up another round after each player received a new card. The first player to complete their cake according to their card's instructions and ring the bell called out: cake done. The host then checks to make sure the player's cake slice is constructed according to that round's card instructions. If it is, then the host gives them a candle card. The object of the game is to acquire 6 candles. Because challengers are competing to be the first to ring the bell, you must have excellent concentration and hand eye coordination while doing the task at a fast pace. My friends and I giggled a lot trying to get our cake slices in the correct order according to each card we got. I was happy that I won the overall game. However, the real prize was watching my guests' eyes open wide with awe when I uncovered my Cake-n-bake looking birthday cake.

Space Themed Party Featuring itCoinz

Disclosure: I received itCoinz from Tryazon in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own. I may collect a share of sales from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them.

ItCoinz are magnetic battle coins that are a super diverse toy.  Not only can you collect these cool looking coins, but you can also turn them into game pieces to challenge opponents with or play on your own. For example, spinning them on top of a spinner or flinging the coins onto a surface.  Since the back of the coins are magnetic, most metal backdrops can be turned into a makeshift game board. For instance, a metal locker at school would be a perfect place to set up an impromptu round of tossing the coins during recess. The set up and game play time can be pretty quick. The game board fits easily in a backpack, and it has a magnetic backing. Therefore, the set up on a locker is quite easy.  Just attach the magnetic side on the surface and have fun lobbing the coins at it. If you do not have a game board, then make a game out of throwing the coins directly onto the locker to have just as much fun.

The itcoinz come in a mystery pack of five. Hence, this is just enough to engage in a rapid battle. If you love the collecting aspect, then there are currently sixty Itcoinz that make up the Series A collection. My favorite part is that This includes holographic ones that are rarer to find inside of a package.

There are several game boards to choose from. I got the planet game board, so I thought it would be fun to invite my friends over for a Space themed game night. Additionally, I decided to incorporate a circular theme as a homage to the round shaped Itcoinz.  Once my friends arrived, we watched the first episode of the space themed anime, Wandaba Style. I served a helping of homemade cheddar herb quiche, that I had baked the night before using a round cake pan, for dinner. After enjoying a relaxing movie and quiche meal, we switched to a livelier activity by engaging in several rounds of hurling the ItCoinz at the numbers on the game board. We found it to be a game of strategy because after throwing one ItCoinz on the magnetic game board, it can be repelled when another ItConiz is tossed. Since, two magnets do not typically stick together.  Although I had gained the highest score, I awarded the second-place winner a gift bag filled with Nutrient Survival packs as they are practical to take on a trip to outer space because they just require water. As a competitive closure to end our tournament, we participated in the Spaceland version in the Mario party video game. Overall, my friends and I had a blast playing with ItCoinz. as an added bonus, I gave them each a Starter Pack, so they can continue the fun we had together collecting and battling on their own.

Azul Board Game with Themed Snack Ideas

Disclosure: I received this Asmodee game from Tryazon in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own. I may collect a share of sales from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them.

Since my friends enjoy playing board games & tasting new recipes, I thought it would be fun to invite them over to play the Azul Board Game. They were able to munch on tasty themed snacks based on the game's tiles, which are the colorful playing pieces. The lemon bars were a big favorite among my guests. Not only did they admire the way the lemon bars resembled the square shaped tiles, but they were similarly decorated with chopped pistachios to mimic the tile's patterns. Additionally, I served sliced cucumbers. They were cut up in circles, as a homage to honeycomb mosaic patterns.

The Azul Board Game is intended for 2-4 players. If you really love art and are good at math, then you are in for a fun time.  The object of the game is to imagine that you are an artisan placing colorful tiles on a wall. Players must make patterns using the least amount of tiles possible. Azul is a super strategic game; since, your moves will be affected by what the person who goes before and after you do. For example, if you had planned to take 2 red tiles from the factory, but someone takes them before you do, then This could cause you to get 4 red tiles from the center of the table. Therefore, at least 1 tile would have to be placed on the floor line resulting in a 1-point minimum loss.  note that the main goal of competing to complete the beautification of the wall of the Evora palace is a big win for fans, like me, of the royalty genre.

Kabuto Sumo Board Game Night

Disclosure: I received this Asmodee game from Tryazon in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own. I may collect a share of sales from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them.

Because I am a big fan of Japan, I really like that the concept of the Kabuto Sumo board game is comprised of Japanese based elements. This game is probably inspired by Japan's Rhinosaurus Beetle fighting and sumo wrestling. What I find really enjoyable about Kabuto Sumo is getting to become an active player instead of just being a spectator. This game allows participants to step into the ring and play in the competition. You can even imagine yourself standing in for a beetle bug or Sumo wrestler by proxy.

The Kabuto Sumo board game reminds me of a cross between pool and the Wizard of Oz arcade game. I think it's reminiscent of pool because you can use your uniquely shaped playing piece to push it out of the ring, much like a pool stick is used to knock balls into pockets. In addition, just like the Wizard of Oz arcade game, the player's goal is to make tokens push out as many tokens as possible. In Kabuto Sumo the disks being pushed do not always go straight. Instead, they get pushed in a circular motion causing the disks to remain in on the board.

Prior to trying out Kabuto Sumo, I did not anticipate that a game would last as long as it did.  However, due to my friends being very competitive, it made the play time last longer. We were definitely thinking about what strategy to follow, several steps ahead. If you play with a group of four, then you have to take into account what your teammate might do or offer suggestions.

The Beetle that I had is named Kimarite. which allows me to use the signature move Shiko during my turn. This means that I had the option to think at least one turn in advance if I wanted to place any green discs on top of my blue sumo playing piece. The following turn, I then could choose to activate the special signature ability called Tsukidashi. If my team did not have any green discs, then I would
not qualify to use the signature move. Additionally, if we were running low on discs then it would be unwise to use Shiko as we might run out of discs and end up losing via submission.  Overall, my friends commented that they had fun playing this game together. Hence, my Kabuto Sumo board game night was a Beetle good time, and my friends and I cannot wait to play it again sumo time soon.

Additionally, I am wearing my own design. The Queenie4ever camo peace sign tank top. If you are interested in purchasing one of these t-shirts, please send us an e-mail at info@queenie4ever.com for pricing and size availability.

Wavelength Game Night with My Squad

Disclosure: I received Asmodee games from Tryazon in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own. I may collect a share of sales from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them.

As a fan of hosting fun themed parties, I wanted to find a table cloth that was on point, to decorate my gaming space. I decided to go shopping at my local fabric store with my mom, who is really good at spotting a bargain and knowing my style. This means we are on the same wavelength of what I was looking for. We headed over to the sale section and the fabric that caught her attention reminded me of a wavelength pattern. She succeeded in helping me to pick out the perfect colorful fabric to match my game night theme.

I recommend playing the game with your close group of friends, since the game requires the players to be on the same wave length. In particular, it helps players in terms of giving and comprehending the clue. However, I had my friends draw for team spots. One example from a round that we played was that I gave my team the clue utensils, because the colored lines were skewed slightly more to the un-hygienic part of the wheel. Most people may think that a spoon is clean, but they could have been used.

I think it is interesting that the opposing team has an opportunity to score a singular point during your team's turn. They must discuss as a group whether they think the clue is generally pointing more in agreement to one side or the other. When my mom's team played. The clue was SpongeBob and the colorful lines on the wheel were just a bit on the round side. She thought this because in the episode "Not Normal" the typically square shaped Sponge Bob loses his sponginess, such that his head takes on a round appearance. In this case, the card the team got read square versus round. Unfortunately, her team misinterpreted the clue as being only square. On the other hand, I got a point for my team because I had insider knowledge on her thought process, since I have watched the cartoon with my mom.

Additionally, I am wearing my own design, The Queenie4ever floral butterfly dress. If you are interested in the dress please send us an e-mail at info@Queenie4ever.com

ZOMBIE CHASE GAME NIGHT : SPOOKY FUN BOARD GAMES WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS

Disclosure: I received PlayMonster games from Tryazon in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own. I may collect a share of sales from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them.

In keeping with the spirit of Halloween, I really enjoyed hosting a spooky fun board game night for my family & friends. Since I always serve a snack to my guests that go along with the theme of my party, I decided I would offer The Spengler Latte from Romancing the Bean Café. Since, its' Ghostbusters movie Halloween theme goes along with mine. The special latte was more than I hoped for, not only was it delicious, but it was just the perfect drink to perk up players to strategize.

What I liked about the Zombie Chase game is that it can be played as a cooperative group effort in order to escape the theme park, or players can try to turn their friends into zombies. My friends worked so well together to avoid us turning into zombies, that we successfully beat the game fairly quickly.

I  enjoyed how the game creates an exciting atmosphere, reminiscent of a Scooby Doo episode where they would go to a theme park and get chased by zombies. Just like how the Scooby gang worked as a unit to solve the mystery, the Zombie Chase game lends a similar air of mystery, fright, team work & fun all rolled into one.

Reign is the second game that we played. I think it is a unique, challenging, & complex board game. If you are playing with the maximum amount of players, it can take a very long time. I really liked the fact that the players get to set up the board the way they want, such as choosing the layout of the gems & picking where your clan members are positioned at the beginning of the game. This was not the case with Zombie Chase. In that game, the tokens must be set up on preset red spaces. It is also fun to put together the puzzle like board game pieces, but they are a bit tricky to place back in their box.

The object of the Reign game is to battle other clans. If you enjoy watching Netflix's Squid Game, you will probably enjoy playing this time sensitive battle royale style game. Since, Reign's objective to be the last remaining player is quite similar. I also found it interesting that unlike the typical board game which only allows players to make one move per turn, Reign allows players to perform several different things within their one turn.

Kids vs. Parents Board Game Day in the Park

Disclosure: I received SpinMaster games from Tryazon in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own. I may collect a share of sales from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them.

Because the weather was nice, I thought it would be fun to hang out with my parents & friends playing board games in a local park. I decided to divide us into kids vs. parents teams to go along with the theme of one of the five games I brought to review. It is called: Beat the Parents.

We began our board game day by playing Beat the Parents. If you are good at trivia, then you will probably enjoy this game. However, I found some of the questions were asked in a confusing manner. I thought the kids cards were mostly based on educational subjects taught in school such as science. On the other hand, the parents cards were mainly TV trivia questions. The most high stakes questions portion of the game was when players landed on a challenge. For example, I successfully removed a card from beneath the timer without it tipping over.

The second game is called Hedbanz Blast Off. We probably spent the most amount of time playing this game. It is familiar and easy to play because it is a guessing game. Although it is nerve racking & scary because it involves a timer & a card that you must wear on your head. It requires players to thread the timer through the headband and then place a card into the timer. I noticed that a large portion of the cards were sports equipment related, as I often found myself asking, am I a ball? I appreciated that there were pre-written questions provided, in case you couldn't quickly think of  one of your own, under the timer constraints.

Jumanji Deluxe is the name of the third game we played. If you are a fan of the original movie, then it is probably what you would expect the board game version to be like in real life. The electronic green dome is really cool! When you press it, that is where your questions & answers appear. I did find it odd that the answer was darkness three times, when there are so many more possibilities. Also, the soundtrack was super loud with no way to adjust the volume, so elephant noises & jungle drums filled the air which hopefully was not too disturbing to fellow park goers. Since it is a cooperative vs competitive game, it makes it a great game to play with your entire family.

The fourth game, Harry Potter Catch the Golden Snitch, is the most difficult game to figure out how to play in my experience. In fact, I'm not sure we were playing it correctly. I think it is supposed to mimic the chaos of how Quidditch is played, but the snitch is much easier to catch. Even though I had trouble trying to figure out my first time playing, I was really excited to try it out with my friends and family as I am a big Harry Potter fan. Thus, I would give it another chance just because I like anything Harry Potter themed.

Netflix Trending Now is the fifth & final game we played at the park. It is sort of similar to Apples to Apples, which is one of my favorite games to play with a group. If you are familiar with Netflix shows, then this game would also be fun. Since we did not have a lot of time left to spend outdoors as I had pre-ordered a delicious yuzu flavored kakigori at a nearby restaurant, it was the perfect game to end our parent vs kid game at the park day before dinnertime, as it was a quick game to play.

Hues and Cues: A Colorful Guessing Game

Disclosure: I received the Hues and Cues game for free, from Tryazon in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own. I may collect a share of sales from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them.

When you're searching in your game closet for a fun game to play with friends or family, Hues and Cues, is an excellent choice. Not only is it great for 3 players minimum to participate in, but also it is super simple to learn. In short,  the game is based around players giving each other clues where they must guess what a specific color coordinate is located on the board. There are two rounds for each clue giver. It was interesting to see how my friends' perceptions of colors were either different or the same as my own.  This made for some very funny moments  as we laughed at each others' clues. If you are a fan of guessing games like my friends and I are, then  you will likely find this game quite entertaining.

To add to the festive party atmosphere of your Hues and Cues game night, I highly suggest serving snacks that fit the theme of the colorful game board. Although there are many colors to choose from, I decided to create two colors based on the food coloring I already had in my kitchen baking supplies. These two choices represent G22 & N25 coordinates on the game board which it turns out are beautiful shades of teal and purple. Note that this was my first attempt at making homemade butter cream frosting.  I usually just buy canned readymade frosting, so I had no idea what it would turn out to be like making it from scratch. The directions were actually easy to follow, but I was surprised at how different the texture was any butter cream I had encountered before. Although it tasted yummy, it had a very interesting chunky appearance. In fact, my friend even commented on it's cool texture, and she wanted to know how I made it that way. My reply: no clue.

I used this recipe from Food.com for the cupcakes: https://www.food.com/recipe/yogurt-vanilla-cupcakes-w-chocolate-frosting-108558

21/2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking powder & vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon baking soda & salt

4 tablespoons softened butter

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 cup nonfat vanilla yogurt

Begin with the frosting to allow time for it to cool. Mix the sugar and cocoa together in a small saucepan. Add half of the milk, stirring constantly until blended. Then add the rest of the milk. Cook on medium heat until the mixture begins to boil. Lower heat and let simmer for a 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 3 minutes. Add the vanilla and chocolate chips, mixing until dissolved. Let cool at room temperature, or cover and refrigerate for future use. For the cake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. In a large bowl, mix the butter and sugar until well blended. Add the eggs to the butter/sugar mixture. Gradually add the flour mixture and yogurt to the butter/sugar mixture. Fill muffin molds 2/3 full and bake for about 20 minutes until it passes the clean toothpick test.

Frosting

Recipe provided by OP Games

1 cup  Room Temperature Butter

5 cups of Confectioner’s Sugar

¼ cup of Heavy Cream

2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract

1 pinch of Salt

Beat butter until creamy. Make sure your butter is softened to room temperature before beginning. Use a hand or stand mixer to beat until smooth and creamy. Add sugar, cream, and vanilla extract. Beat on low speed until these ingredients are incorporated, then bump up the mixer to medium-high speed. At this point, you can add more confectioners’ sugar if the frosting is too thin or a splash of heavy cream if it’s too thick. Taste and salt. Add a pinch of salt to offset the sweetness.

HOURS OF FUN WITH PIXICADE MOBILE GAME MAKER

Disclosure: I received Pixicade for free from Tryazon in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

One of the things I enjoy doing during my free time is playing mobile games. I usually play alone,  but I also really like to play games with friends. Hence, I love that fact that Pixicade mobile game maker is a fun game that you can craft yourself or with your friends to create a one or multi-player game. Based on the three manuals that are included, you must draw the game on pieces of white printer paper you provide using the five different colored markers that come with the game. Each player then can play the one player game on their own device or share for the multiplayer one.

The first step to creating a game, is to chose from the categories that are offered in one of the three instruction books. These books serve as guides to help players draw their own unique game. The types of games that I created are the get the goals and the maze maker which are one player games. I also created a two player game from the paddle battle category. The second step involves  taking a photo of your drawing and putting it into the App. Once it is uploaded in the App., the third step is editing it until it becomes the exact game you had in mind. The fourth step requires you to attempt to beat your game in order to insure that it is actually playable. In the event that it is unbeatable, then you will have to tweak it in the App until it is. After you've beaten your game, the fifth and last step is to share your game with other players or try to play it yourself and beat your high score.

Additionally, I am wearing my own design. The Queenie4ever kids pink panda cupcake t-shirt that was exclusive to CheatDayLand in LA. There are still a few left in stock, so if you are interested in purchasing one of these t-shirts please send us an e-mail at info@queenie4ever.com for pricing and size information.

BOARD GAME NIGHT

Disclosure: I received Akibabus's The Witches Annual Race & Boxitale: Knight's of Nature for free from Tryazon in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own. I may collect a share of sales from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them.

The Witches Annual Race Board Game by Akibabus is best played with three people: One judge and two players. Each player is assigned two boards, placed side by side, to create a larger playing field. The main features of the game are a dry erase marker, used to draw your path in a variety of patterns, and a set of cards that direct you to complete tasks, in order to advance through a series of roadblocks. The objective is to finish the fastest in order to win against your opponent. I like how the cards also make it a game of chance. For instance, one card could allow you to advance very fast while another card drawn could make your opponent become stuck in another area. Thus, it combines a bit of luck for one player to win over another. This partial lack of control in the outcome, makes the game really exciting, as you continue drawing cards that could be your friend or foe. On the other hand, players have much more control over using the dry erase marker in determining the outcome. This game requires concentration, so it's best for someone who likes to play a game of wits.

The second game BoxiTale: Knights of Nature by Akibabus also requires concentration. However, it is more about playing at your own pace. Since, players are allowed to take their time to complete the tasks. Note that prior to starting the game, players need a device capable of downloading an App. This will instruct you to build the 3D game board and show the game itself. Basically, the game consists of watching a video in order to advance to the next step. In the video a robot instructs the players what to add to your game board through a series of tasks to complete such as what to object to construct, color, or puzzle to solve etc...  For example, it may tell you to build an origami boat or construct a ladder and then add those items to your game board. Next, players must photograph their completed project. There is no winner or loser. Being an only child, I really like this game because it is set up to be played solo or you could share half and half with one other person. I found Knights of Nature to be a unique immersive experience. I have never seen or played anything quite like it. The closest comparison would be if the PBS show Cyberchase which featured craft supplies that you could use to do whatever educational task they are doing.

A  fun board game night dessert I made was a cake inspired by The Witches Annual Race Game Board. I added several decorative ingredients. The White chocolate chips represented the boulders, the Golden Grahams appear to look like the witches' houses when placed on top of the cake, and the sparkler candles, when lit gave off a glow to imitate the teleport tunnel towers. It was a tasty & easy to bake treat that made my board game night extra special by giving it a magical and festive party atmosphere.
